In times past you decided if your subjects ought
Go out, remain at home, stay up or go to bed.
And all about you, countless petty wars were fought
Over what to watch and when and countless tears were shed.
But too long, now, have you been in the wind and rain,
Oh television, long ago invested new.
The cosy living room that once was your domain
Has fallen to the treachery of some parvenu.
And yet, incongruous as you are beneath that tree,
I see you still hold sway and that I shouldn't mourn.
A Muse or Fate or some benevolent deity
Is champion to your cause and thus you've been reborn.
So, far from coming here to write your epitaph,
I kneel in front of you and take your photograph.
